Welcome Letter
Dear Legends Tailgaters,
I am proud to welcome you to The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, THE INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE! This is the moment you’ve all been waiting for…It’s the buzz of energy in the Indiana air. It’s the sense of pride racing through your heart. It’s that feeling connecting you to “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. It’s time to come Back Home Again Sunday, May 28th for the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500!!!!
What makes this weekend even more special is the opportunity to “Remember and Honor” our fellow Americans that have given the ultimate sacrifice to this great nation. Our tailgate will do just that by raising money for a worthy local charity. To date, The Legends have raised more than $7,200.00 to assist local Veterans through the Gary Sinise Foundation, Semper Fi Fund, Indy Honor Flight, The Marine Corps Coordinating Council, and Azimuth. We are proud to continue this tradition this year by supporting The Mooresville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1111. No organization treats Veterans and their families better than the VFW. When I say no one…that includes the American Legion Post 500 in Speedway, Indiana. Cub Scouts do a better job than those folks…
Moving on…throughout this Track Pack, you will see several “Legend’s Tips” that provide best practices. These are lessons learned from previous Legends as they went about their journey during this historic week/weekend. It is highly encouraged that Legends old and new adhere to these recommendations to ensure a safe and fun Indy 500. If not, you may find yourself on the end of a Legend’s Tip in the 2023 Track Pack.
Let’s make some memories…Race on Race Fans!!
Jarod Overton, Chairman

- We will be located where you see the camper above between turns 1 and 2.
- Downtown Indy is due East
- The Coke Lot, Snake Pit, American Legion, and Main Street are depicted on the map.

Left Turn Legend Themes for 2023 Indy 500
Farhan will be allowed to use his dinosaur as a costume! Nothing says fun like a couple of theme nights to get the party started. This year, our theme nights are as follows:
1. Race Car Driver/Pit Crew/Mechanic
2. White Trash (Dan can come as is)
3. Breakfast Club Attire (Think Purdue Football not the movie Nads…anything goes)
Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) and Overton Industries
If you are looking for a driver to follow, Overton Industries is sponsoring Indianapolis based Ed Carpenter Racing! The number 33 BITNILE Chevrolet car is pictured below. Conor Daly (20) and Rinus VeeKay (21) are also driving for Ed Carpenter. They promise to make a
strong run at Indy 500’s Winner’s Circle!
For 10 of ECR’s 11 Indianapolis 500s, this team has had at least one car qualify in the first three rows. ECR has been in every shootout for the pole position since 2013 (changed in 2021 to the Firestone Fast Six). Carpenter has seven Top 4 starts at the Indianapolis 500 in the past 10 years.
Now with well over 300 race starts, 2023 will mark Ed Carpenter Racing’s 12th season of NTT INDYCAR SERIES competition. VeeKay is the longest-tenured full-time driver in ECR’s history and will compete behind the wheel of the No. 21 BITNILE.COM for a fourth consecutive year. Daly returns for his second year driving the No. 20 BITNILE.COM Chevrolet full-time and fourth season with ECR. Carpenter remains the only active owner/driver as he races in the five oval events in his 21st year of NTT INDYCAR SERIES competition. Check out his site at: www.edcarpenterracing.com
Pre-Race Driver Selection – Time to win some cash!
On race day, 2x Legend, Chase will be posted under the tent selling drivers for $10.00 per driver. $100.00 will go to the VFW with $230.00 going to the person who draws the winning driver. Drivers can be sold amongst members/race fans after drawn out of the hat.

Legend’s Tip(s):
- Do not use a super soaker to blast unsuspected female race fans in the chest area as they walk by. Also, if an IMPD officer asks you to leave, you should do so.
- Do not be offended by over consuming Bourbon drinkers.
- Do not motorboat a nearby race fan’s niece
- Do not yell, “nice tits” to departing race fans as they may have just departed
from your tailgate and are guests of Team Owner: Big Ron. - Drink cautiously or be aware of the ghost of Florence Henderson! Legend’s Bar opens Sunday morning at 6 am!
27 May – Sunday
Thirty-three drivers. 200 laps. 500 miles. One bottle of cold milk. The only thing
missing from this magical Indianapolis 500 mix is you. Don’t miss out on another incredible edition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” This is a fun day but a long day. Pace yourself so you don’t crash…see what I did there? Look out for such challenges as beer pong, local cornhole, bags games, drawing drivers, or good ole fashion drankin until we make our way over for the start of the race. You don’t want to miss these festivities. It is a great celebration and remembrance of the brave warriors who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. After the starting festivities, it’s down to business.
- 6:00 am: Legend’s Bar opens
- Yes, we will have coffee…and Bloodies and Screwdrivers and Beer!
- Find and pack your cooler for the race.
- 8:00 am: Lincoln Square Pancake House Breakfast Burritos
- I STRONGLY recommend. If the Bourbon is kickin Saturday night, which, if history proves correct, it may be…you may need two.
- 10:30 am: Head over to the race and grab our seats.
- Be sure to have your cooler packed.
- 12:30 – Start of the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500
- TBD – After Race Cookout/Cleanup/Party
- We will wrap up and clean up Sunday night/Monday morning. It is then back to reality. This promises to be a great Memorial Day Weekend. I look forward to seeing you at the Left Turn Legend’s Tailgate!
Legend’s Tips:
- Do not sleep in the back of a pick-up truck on a rake or shovel prior to race day.
- Do not and I repeat do not drink Milk in celebration after the race. This may be a long time tradition for the Indy 500 Champ, but he has also not consumed 5 days worth of Beer. Consider yourself warned.
- When the Chairman is conducting his pre-race interview with the local Indy News Station, do not have non-athletes playing the new fad Fowling game in the background. This will embarrass all Legends at the Tailgate.
Additional Events
There are additional events that take place that you could choose to do if you would like. Feel free to take off and walk around the track, take an UBER downtown, walk to main street in Speedway, or brave the Coke lot. Coke lot is on the corner of 25th St and Georgetown. (4th turn of the track). You will see the “class” of the fanbase at Indy.
- 7:00am – 3:30pm: The Once Famous Snake Pit
- This goes on during the race. Tickets are $70.00 in addition to your original ticket. It’s in turn three, a long walk, but could be interesting to check out…options…you have options.
- Tickets

disappoint. Ask Matthew O. about the new Snake Pit. He seems to enjoy it.Legend’s Tip: You have to be on your game to joint this crowd. If you like EDM,
this is for you. It’s a secret but one Legend Member outlasted the “kids” at the Snake Pit last year…who could it be!

ENTER COKE LOT AT YOUR OWN RISK! Hahah. See videos in the links above. It’s worth a walk down to 25th and Georgetown to see this “tradition”. You may get stopped by land owners who figured out how to make an extra buck by requiring wrist bands in the lot. They were 10.00 last year, but thanks to Joe and the VP…they have probably gone up.
Legend’s Tip: Carry about 50.00 in cash on you. If you get mugged, it’s not a huge deal (no muggings have occurred in 12 straight years of doing this).
Traveling from out of Town:
We have Legend’s coming from Indiana, Virginia, Washington State, Florida, and
California! If you are coming from out of town, you will be flying into the Indy
Intl Airport.
An UBER to IMS LOT 3P Electric at the TRACK is required! As you can imagine,
no one will be “available” to pick you up or drop you off.
Cost: 15.00 one way

Sleeping Arrangements:
Over the years, we have slept in Hotels, RVs, Legend’s Bar, the ground, and in tents. It will not be much different this year except for the use of the Team Owner’s RV. That’s right. Big Ron had too much bourbon and is letting us stay in the motor home. Some lucky Legends will end up in the heat and cooled trailer. By the end of the evening, will it really matter?
Legend’s Tip: Shower up Thursday morning prior to leaving for the track because
water is a premium. I recommend baby wipes for all!
Packing List:
- Sunglasses, Sunglasses, Sunglasses
- Packable Cooler: Coolers must not exceed 18 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches. If it does not meet this requirement, you will be asked to walk the oversized cooler back to the tailgate. Glass containers are not allowed.
